Community resiliency
When life changes, community matters.
Your donations help strengthen community resiliency by supporting local connections people can turn to when they need food, shelter or help finding resources. United Way of Northwest Illinois brings partners together to help neighbors move through difficult moments with support close to home.
A meal. A safe place. A starting point.
An unexpected expense, a change in housing or a health concern can interrupt the routines a household depends on. Having somewhere to turn helps people address immediate needs while considering what comes next.
In its 2024–2025 Impact Report, UWNI highlighted support for Freeport Area Church Cooperative’s Chicago Avenue Mission, connecting community investment with access to shelter and support.
The report also featured NICAA’s Golden Meals, a local partner providing meals for older adults. These services illustrate how community partnerships can support everyday needs and help neighbors maintain connections.
Because of donations, UWNI can support local organizations working to make those essential services available. Each partnership contributes to a community better prepared to respond when circumstances change.
Finding help should have a clear first step
Knowing that help exists is different from knowing where to find it. When someone needs information about food, housing, utilities or other services, a connection to local resources can provide a place to begin.
UWNI’s 2024–2025 Impact Report documented 211 contacts from Carroll, Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties. The report recorded needs across these communities, showing why accessible resource information matters throughout Northwest Illinois.
Community support helps UWNI connect people, organizations and information. The goal is to help neighbors identify possible resources and take their next step.
Stronger communities take people showing up
Community resiliency also grows through the work neighbors do together. UWNI’s 2024–2025 Impact Report highlighted a 2025 Day of Action involving more than 100 volunteers at 10 locations.
UWNI’s documented Day of Action projects have included sorting books for Little Free Libraries, improving the playground at King Community Campus, and helping with projects at the Galena Food Pantry. These activities support shared spaces and local organizations that residents rely on.
Donations and volunteer participation give people different ways to contribute. Together, they help turn a willingness to help into practical work for Northwest Illinois communities.
Help keep community connections strong.
When you donate, you help UWNI support local partnerships and connect resources with community needs. When you volunteer, you bring your time and skills to work that benefits neighbors. Both help build a stronger network of support across Carroll, Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties.
